Katakana Learning

To be honest I haven’t ever heard of Katakana before last year during Japanese Calligraphy. It was something that I didn’t know was a thing. I thought the only writing system was kanji and Hiragana. It surprised me to realize Katakana was a thing, though it totally made sense to me after realizing how useful it is.

I’m still learning to be able to realize and read Hiragana so I haven’t yet taken the time to study katakana as hard as Hiragana so it’s still very new and fresh. The only katakana I can realize is my first name written. I feel like it’s super interesting how English we just say the foreign word rather than converting it over. I think this may because we only have the alphabet as our writing system compared to the Japanese that have Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana. This also made me think about how a lot of English words are foreign words we just use as they’re used foreign and we don’t try changing it.

I’m very excited to start on Katakana after I finish learning Hiragana and being able to talk about foreign words a bit more. I hope to also get a Japanese pen pal to practice my Japanese every now and then. I think being able to talk about English concepts to them using Katakana will be very fun and help me even learn more.

Though I feel like I’ll see my struggle towards the future being how to keep track of Katakana and Hiragana. I think the biggest one is concerning Hiragana with curvy and Katakana with angles.  I think studying both together will also help me differ each of the two groups. I’m hopping that’ll be a form to learn both at the same time and also maybe be able to recall them a lot faster. I have had a bit of an issue with my recall so far. I think that more studying will help me.

  1. I wish you had been there today! We split up into groups and studied different parts based on similar attributes. You can do the same thing with your flashcards. put them in piles accordng to hoe they look:
almost identical to hiragana (hiragana to katakana pairs)
a few main parts of the hiragana
dot to dot version of hiragana
    Lots of 7s
pairs that are similar (only katakana to katakana shapes)
And a pile for all the rest.

Ask your class mates about their stories
